Sometimes it takes more courage to bring a new idea into the police station than responding to a “shots fired” call.

One of my eureka moments happened in the 1980s when I decided I wanted to learn the best business practices from the private sector because there seemed to be few new ideas or innovations coming to those of us who were committed to improving policing. That’s when I ran into Dr. Deming and his work concerning the improvement of systems, Robert Greenleaf’s servant leadership and Tom Gordon’s Leadership Effectiveness Training.
