What Police Can Learn From Business and Industry

Sometimes it takes more courage to bring a new idea into the police station than responding to a “shots fired” call.

One of my eureka moments happened in the 1980s when I decided I wanted to learn the best business practices from the private sector because there seemed to be few new ideas or innovations coming to those of us who were committed to improving policing. That’s when I ran into Dr. Deming and his work concerning the improvement of systems, Robert Greenleaf’s servant leadership and Tom Gordon’s Leadership Effectiveness Training.

We developed Quality Police when we put these three ideas from business and industry together. For example, take a look at these ideas today from business consultant Patty McCord. How might you put these eight lessons to work in your police department?

There are many good ideas out there in business and industry today that can help police improve; especially when it comes to leading and growing your employees and maintaining high customer/citizen satisfaction. And let’s not forget about building trust!

Let’s not forget about courage as a major ingredient in effective policing — sometimes it takes more courage to bring a new idea into the police station than responding to a “shots fired” call.
